FAQ - Height of basketball backboard

Ask Jack: What is the proper width and height for a middle school backboard. ED on 12/3/06

Jack sez: The standard basketball goal or rim, not the backboard, is 10 feet off the ground or floor. Backboards vary considerably in shape and size. However, the important factor is to set the backboard so that the goal is 10 feet off the playing surface.

The 10 foot high goal is suitable for youngsters age 10 and over, if they have been playing organized basketball for any length of time. For younger players and those with little experience in basketball, set the goal at a height at which they can shoot comfortably without awkward and exaggerated shooting movements.
